The Pleasure Grounds

Weymouth Street, Warminster, BA12 9NH

Leisure

To round off the Wonderful Warminster trail head to the Lake Pleasure Grounds off Weymouth Street. The park and boating lake opened in July 1924 and have seen various additions and improvements over the decades. The park came about in the aftermath of the First World War when unemployment was a big problem across the country. Warminster was no exception and in 1921 the local branch of the British Legion suggested a public works scheme to employ those men out of work. In January 1923 the council bought the old town tip and work began to transform it into a park with a boating lake, Lido and other attractions including tennis courts and a bandstand. The grand opening on 26th July 1924 included various entertainments and sporting competitions, and in the evening there was a firework display and concert. In 2016 Warminster Town Council took on ownership and began a programme of major works. The Lake Pleasure Grounds is now a major attraction with a splash pad, a skate park, tennis courts and a putting green, play and picnic areas, and a recently created tree trail. With the beautifully planted flowerbeds and abundance of wildlife, the park is both a tranquil haven and a hive of activity.
