Christian history is full of great thinkers and writers wrestling with the human condition and their understanding of God. The influence of Thomas A Kempis and his description of radical humility is s o great that The Imitation ofChrist has sometimes been called the fifth gospel. Leo Tolstoy might be the greatest novelist in the world but, at the age of 50, when he suffers his existential crisis, nothing means anything to him until he finds his own kind of Christian Faith. Marilynne Robinson, the Pulitzer prize-winning novelist and author of the much-loved Gilead, is probably the most articulate and thoughtful modern defender of Christian experience and practice against thepopular newatheists.
