Melksham VE Day Commemorations

Hosted by Melksham Town Council

Thursday, 8 May 2025

08:00 – 22:00(GMT+1)

Market Place, Melksham, SN12 6ES

Melksham’s VE Day commemorations will be a day of reflection, celebration, and community spirit, marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day). The day will begin with a stirring proclamation by the town crier at 8:00 AM, echoing through the town to announce the significance of the occasion. This will be followed by a flag-raising ceremony at 9:00 AM, a moment of unity and remembrance.

At lunchtime, local primary school children will gather for a picnic in the park, bringing a sense of joy and togetherness to the event. Later in the day, the historic bells of St Michael & All Angels Church will ring out in commemoration to mark the end of hostilities in Europe.

As evening falls, musical performances will fill the air, leading up to the lighting of a beacon and the Lamp Light of Peace at 9:00 PM, a poignant tribute to those who served and sacrificed for the freedom of all. This solemn yet uplifting ceremony will close the day’s events, ensuring that the legacy of VE Day is honoured with dignity and gratitude.
